After about 20 years of service, AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) will be shut down by the company (AOL) on December 15th, 2017. On the 2000s, AIM is one of popular instant messaging beside Yahoo Messenger, ICQ or MSN Messenger. But the popularity of messaging client waned with the rise of new services and smartphones. AOL stopped development of the client back in 2012 but kept services online.

For some people (maybe many people) this will not give any effect because they don’t use AIM anymore. However, some people who are fanatical users will certainly feel disappointed with it. Ironically AOL does not provide the facility to move accounts to other services. Thus when this service closes your account on AOL and everything related to it will be lost. AIM user still can save important messages, files or picture manually to PC before that date.
